PRODRIVE HISTORY
Prodrive are one of the world’s leading motorsport and automotive businesses. They currently employ over 1000 people at operations not only in the U.K but in the U.S.A, Germany, Thailand, and Australia. The company works with both vehicle manufacturers and their suppliers to help provide and create vehicles that the consumer wants.
The company was founded in 1984 by Ian Parry and David Richards. Their initial involvement with motor racing was running small teams for Porsche, MG and BMW where they had different levels of success. They soon expanded into touring cars, with BMW’s M3 in the 1987 British Touring Car Championship, by 1988 they were outright champions and the following year, class champions which they were to repeat again in 1990.
They were doing well as a company and in 1999 an investment group, Apax Partners bought 49% of the company.
Over the years Prodrive acquired other businesses such as tickford, an engineering business based in Milton Keynes, Glenn Seton Racing team and renamed it Ford Performance Racing. By this point Prodrive also owned 51% in Ford Performance Vehicles.
Aston Martin and Prodrive created a partnership called Aston Martin Racing after the success of the Ferrari 550. 2004 saw the unveiling of Auston Martin Racing’s DBR9, based on the road going DB9. The 12 hours at Sebring in 2005 saw the team win the GT1 class, the 24 hrs Le Mans in 2005 saw them come third to the factory corvette team, at Le Mans in 2006 they came second to the corvettes but in 2007, the same event the Aston Martin team won.
In 1990 Prodrive entered into a highly successful relationship with Subaru, the smaller more agile Impreza would become the platform which Prodrive would have most success with in rally’s.
FIA president Max Mosleywas impressed with Prodrive’s bid to gain entry to the F1 he was known as saying "Prodrive has the best combination of financial backing , technical capability and motorsport experience. Also, prodrive’s chief executive, David Richards, has experience as a Formula One team principal" Naturally in 2006 entry was granted for the 2008 Formula One World Championship, unfortunately due to continuing delays to the new concorde agreement they have had to rule it out.
Prodrive continue to grow and expand and have recently unveiled plans for their new state of the art facility at its 200 acre road car technology site in Warwickshire. This site is intended to be a world class research and development facility with the capability of employing more than 1000 personnel, it has also been suggested it could "become the location for a new British F1 team.
A number of companies led by Prodrive will be financing the project known as The Fulcrum Partnership with an expected cost of between £100m to £200m.
