PORSCHE HISTORY
Sept 3rd 1875 Ferdinand Porsche is born, thirty-four years later on Sept 19th 1909 Ferdinand Anton Earnest Porsche, later known as “Ferry” is born.
1938 sees the birth of the first Porsche, the Porsche 64. The 64 used many components of the VW Beetle. The first production Porsche, the 356 Porsche sports car, followed ten years later in 1948.
The Porsche 356 also began life also using many Beetle components, including its engine, gearbox and suspension. Over several evolution stages that followed these VW components were phased out and replaced with purely Porsche designed and made components; with the last 356s powered by a Porsche engine.
The last 356s had bodywork designed by Erwin Komenda, who also designed the body of the Beetle, featuring the air-cooled rear-engine configuration (like the Beetle) that has become a signature in Porsche designs.
In 1951, after working on the 356 with his son Ferry Porsche, Ferdinand Porsche died following a stroke.
1963 saw the launch of the Porsche 911, following Porsche’s success in motor-racing, namely with the Porsche 550 Spyder. The design team for the 911 was led by Ferry Porsche.
The design group gave sequential numbers to every project (356, 550 etc) but the designated 901 became the Porsche 911 due to Peugeot’s commercial rights on all "x0x" names.
The Porsche 911 has become Porsche’s most famous model, successful on race track, rallies and in terms of sales.
Still in production today, the current Porsche 911, after over 40 years of developments, shares only basic styling and mechanical concepts of the rear-engined six cylinder coupe with the original Porsche 911.
The first CEO of Porsche planned to cease production of the Porsche 911 during the 70s and replace it with the V8-front engined 928, however history has shown that the Porsche 911 has well outlasted the Porsche 928.
1996 saw the introduction of the Porsche Boxster as a 1997 model, the smallest and cheapest Porsche to date, replacing the Porsche 968, which had been discontinued the previous year. The Porsche Boxster was the biggest volume seller from introduction until the Porsche Cayenne arrived in model year 2003. *CAR* AC Schnitzer Alpina AMG Aston Martin Audi Bentley BMW Cosworth Ferrari Lamborghini Lotus Maserati Mercedes Benz MG Noble Porsche Prodrive Range Rover Subaru Impreza *BIKE* Aprilia BMW Bimota Ducati Harley Davidson Honda Kawasaki Norton Suzuki Triumph Yamaha previous year. The Porsche Cayenne Turbo S has one of the most powerful engines in Porsche’s history, second only to the Porsche Carrera GT. The Porsche Carrera GT came into production in 2004, being not only the most powerful, but the most expensive Porsche production model available to date.
In 2006 Porsche launched the Porsche Cayman, a mid-engined 2-seater sports car, a coupe version of the second generation convertible Porsche Boxster. The Porsche Cayman and the second generation Porsche Boxster share many components including the headlights. However, unlike the Porsche Boxster the Porsche Cayman has a large hatchback for access to luggage areas on top and in the back of the engine cover, the Porsche Cayman also has revised suspension due to its fixed roof increasing the stiffness of its chassis.
