MASERATI HISTORY
Maserati is an Italian manufacturer of racing cars and sports cars, established in December 1 1914 in Bologna, where you can find a fountain statue of Neptune by Flemish sculptor Giovanni Da Bologna. The fountain is a well know symbol of Bologna, and it was Neptune’s trident of this very fountain that inspired the more stylised version that is used as Masserati’s badge.
Originally set up by the Maserati brothers, Alfierei Maserati, Bindo Maserati, Carlo Maserati, Ettore Maserati, Ernesto Maserati and Mario Maserati, it was Mario Maserati who was an artist and designed the Maserati badge. In 1937 the remaining Maserati brothers sold their shares in the company ro rhw Orsi family, although they staid on in engeneering roles within the company. It was the Orsi family who moved Masserati’s headquarters to Modena just over 50km from where they started, where they are still based today.
In 1968 Maserati was purchased by Citroën, Adolfo Orsi remained the nominal president, but the Citroën ownership bought great change to Maserati. New models were launched, and were built in greatly larger numbers that ever before. New models included the first mass-produced mid-engined Maserati, the Maserati Bora in 1971. Shortly followed by the Maserati Merak and the Maserati Khamsin.
The 1973 oil crisis caused a decline in demand for fuel guzzeling sports cars, and the production boom pretty much died out. Citroën went bankrupt in 1974, and in May the following year Maserati was declared in liquidation. The Italian government invested money to try to keep Maserati afloat, and it continued at a low level.
Later in 1975 Alessandro de Tomaso the former Agentinian racing driver, became the new managing director of Maserati put the company back on it’s feet, arranging for Benelli the motorcyle company, which he controlled, to buy Maserati from Citroën, installing him as head. New models were introduced the following year, including the Maserati Kyalami and the Maserati Quattroporte III. Maserati also worked closely with Chrysler, who purchased part of Maserati and they jointly produced a car, the Chrysler TC by Maserati.
1993 saw Fiat aquire ownership of Maserati, making substancial investments into the company giving Maserati a renewal of life. 1997 Fiat sold a 50% share of Maserati to Maserati’s long time arch rival Ferrari (although Ferrari was, and still is, owned itself by Fiat). In 1999 Ferrari took full control of Maserati. However in 2005 was seperated from Ferrari and brought back under Fiat’s control.
