LAMBORGHINI HISTORY
The Italian company was founded in 1963 by Ferruccio Lamborghini who already owned a very successful tractor factory, Lamborghini Trattori S.p.A.
1963 at the Turin Auto Show was the first public appearance of the Lamborghini 350 GTV prototype. The following year sales of the Lamborghini 350 GTV began. Becoming a great success, with over 130 examples being sold. Ferruccio Lamborghini used the sign of the Taurus as the badge for the Lamborghini.
The Lamborghini 400 GT was to follow the 350 GTV. The excellent sales of the 400 GT and 350 GTV gave the company the funds to create there first supercar the legendary Lamborghini Miura, the vehicle was premiered by Ferruccio Lamborghini himself at the Turin Auto Show in November 1965. (car was only a chassis) In March 1966 the completed car was displayed at the Geneva Auto Show. 1967 they sold 111 models of the Lamborghini Miura and this helped to accelerate them into the small world of supercar manufacturers.
In 1968 Lamborghini designed a four seat car based on the Marzel concept car which they named the Lamborghini Espada. An interesting fact about this car is that the glass taillight panel was the same they used in the contemporary Fiat 124 Coupe. The Lamborghini Espada ending up receiving minor improvements as time went by which lead to three different versions.
During 1971 Lamborghini bought a LP500 Countach prototype. Three years later in 1974 production started. This was the first car to sport Lamborghini now famous scissor doors. When Pirelli P-Zero tyres came out Lamborghini were the first to use them on this model.
1972 saw the company suffer a major setback. The South American nation cancelled a massive tractor order. Upgrades had already been made to the factories. This resulted in Ferruccio selling a part of his share to Fiat in the tractor factory.
The sales of the Lamborghini Countach kept the company running throughout the seventies. The car division soon became self sufficient and profitable. However Lamborghini sold the remaining stock to a swiss investor.
During the 1970s the oil crisis plagued the high performance car sales, and Lamborghini suffered budget and parts supply problems. Cars were being sold with a two year back order which led to customers becoming fed up with waiting for them. Lamborghini developed the reputation of creating a rich playboys toy as they were never raced unlike the Ferrari, Porsche and the Maserati.
In 1978 Lamborghini declared bankruptcy. The Swiss based Mimran brother took over the company. They helped turn things round for Lamborghini in the 1980s.
1987 saw the company being sold to the Chrysler Corperation. This was when Lamborghini were working on the Countach successor, the Lamborghini Diablo. Vast resources were brought to the table when Chrylser took over this included design input, pollution controls and new manufacturing techniques. This resulted in another successful Lamborghini for the company.
1994 saw the company being sold again this time to an Indonesian investor. They did not last long as the company was sold again in the late 1990s. By this time the German car company Audi AG were interested and by 1998 they become sole owner of Automobli Lamborghini.
Lamborghini’s most sophisticated two-seater to date was created with Audi’s vast technical resources.
