BMW HISTORY
On July 21st 1917 BMW was founded by Karl Rapp. The company was originally as an engine manufacturer. Their headquarters were based in Munich, Germany and still is to the present day. The recognisable blue and white BMW logo actually has a link to the blue and white checked flag of Bavaria.
Pre WWII the company was actually prohibited to build aircraft in Germany. BMW then switched to manufacture railway breaks. In 1919 they designed there first motorcycle engine on behalf of a company in Nuremberg.
During WWII BMW supplied to army and other motorised parts of the army, especially the Luftwaffe and the Waffen SS. Over 30,000 BMW 801 aero-engines were manufactured up 1945. Come the end of the war the BMW the Munich factory was heavily bombed and destroyed. However factories on the eastern side where seized by the U.S.S.R. After the war BMW where actually banned from manufacturing for three years. In 1948 BMW manufactured there first car and motorcycle since WWII. The cars produced then where the BMW 507 and BMW 503. These weren’t not a success commercially and only a small volume was built.
In modern times BMW has now expanded into the world market. In 1994 Spartanburg, South Carolina BMW started to produce new vehicles. At this present time BMW manufactures the BMW X5, BMW Z4. in the mid-nineties BMW owned the Rover group. BMW then owed the brands of Rover, Mini & Land Rover. In the year 2000 Rover was sold after big losses. Land Rover was also sold to rivals Ford.
