BENTLEY HISTORY
Bentley Motors was founded on January 18th 1919 by Walter Owen Bentley, W O Bentley was previously known for his Bentley BR1, this was a rotary aero-engine that was used in World War 1. Bentley is obviously more renowned for its range of luxury automobiles and Grand Tourers.
Thanks to the dedication of a group of wealthy British automobile enthusiasts known as the “Bentley Boys”, the cars reputation for high performance was kept alive. One of the Bentley Boys raced Le Train Bleu (The Blue Train Bentley) from Cannes to London and won, this Bentley was a special bodied 6.5 L car. The Bentley Boys then won four consecutive races at Le Mans from 1927 to 1930.
In the 1920’s Bentley was a serious competitor to Rolls-Royce, in fact the 8L Bentley was considered a better machine than anything that Rolls-Royce had to offer at that time. However the Great Depression destroyed demand for expensive cars and Bentley was finally sold off to Rolls-Royce in 1931.
