AMG
AMG or Aufrecht Melcher Großaspach was created in 1967 by two former Mercedes engineers in a town near Stuttgart. AMG is an abbreviation that stands for Hans Werner Aufrecht (A) and Eberhard Melcher (M) who were partners, whilst the town where the company was founded Großaspach (G) made up the third letter of the company name.
AMG first designed and tested racing engines and then expanded into building trucks which were based upon Mercedes cars. By the early 1980’s they were also developing a range of upgrade packages and accessories which became official when AMG supplied Mercedes-Benz with aftermarket alloy wheels and other products in the mid 80’s.
Mercedes-Benz acquired AMG in 1999 and through the early 2000’s AMG focused mainly on supercharged engines (with the exception of the V12 used in the Pagani Zonda). In 2005 production rose to approximately 20,000 AMG vehicles and in 2006 the company announced they had decided to use turbocharging instead of supercharging which would give a higher output to the engine.
Current AMG models, which are stamped by the engine builder with their own personal signature include the: 55, 65, DTM Coupe/Cabriolet, DTM Black Series and 63.
This year marks the 40th anniversary for AMG and it has grown into a successful brand that gives both pleasure and performance to the AMG enthusiast.
